Chapter Eleven

Best Laid Plans

“Wars may be fought with weapons, but they are won by men.

It is the spirit of men who follow

and of the man who leads that gains the victory”.

George S. Patton

0200 Hours

19 November

Clark stood by in Section Three until the patch had been fully welded over the breach. Then he headed for Section One to oversee the repairs of the main entry.

Teams were taking turns manning the heavy weapons on the roof to avoid anyone developing hypothermia. Units Five and Six had both been converted to a makeshift hospital. Clark learned that there were fifteen wounded and nine dead.

They would have to consolidate forces. That was enough men dead or out of the fight to comprise an entire team. Clark was going to suggest eliminating Team Four and putting Jordan on monitor duty inside the Command Module. That turned out to be a moot point when he saw Jordan’s name among the dead.

Once the main entrance was sealed, he headed for the improvised hospital. Every former member of the PJs was there administering aid. Even Morales and Barnes were there. Morales was wounded. She had a bandage on her left arm.

“What happened?” Clark asked, nodding at her arm.

“I got creased by an arrow,” she said, “right before you and Gideon closed the breach. That was a hell of a thing to watch.”

“It had to be done,” said Clark. “We just did what we had to do.”

“Well,” said Morales, “I’ve never even heard of anything like that before. It was like something out of the Roman Legion or something.”

“Hopefully, we’ll never have to do that again,” said Clark, smiling.

“Why don’t you have a seat, sir,” said Morales. “Let me take a look at you.”

“I’m fine,” Clark replied. “Take care of them first.”

“Sir,” said Morales with more force, “you’ve got two chunks of rock sticking out of the back of your head. Your side is bleeding and you’re missing part of your ear. I think you need to sit down.”

“Goddamn it, Clark,” said CSM Hammond. “You look like shit. Do as the little lady asked and sit the fuck down before you pass out.”

Clark gave the older warrior a wary look but listened to what he was told. CSM Hammond had his left arm in a sling and there was a large bandage on his left shoulder. There was also a bandage covering the right side of his head, just above the ear.

“What the hell happened to you?” asked Clark.

“Got clipped by an arrow,” said CSM Hammond. “Armor stopped most of it, but it still got me pretty good. Looks like I’m out of it for a few days. Me and Saunders both.”

“What happened to him?” asked Clark. “I haven’t seen him since the battle started.”

“He took an arrow through the leg,” said CSM Hammond. “Doc’s got the bleeding stopped, but he came damned close to bleeding out. Doc says he’s gonna make it, but might walk with a limp for a while. He won’t be joining the team for morning PT for a bit.
